Snapchat Memories overlay PNG: how to put captions back on your photos
In a Snapchat export, the caption, stickers and drawings you added are saved as a separate transparent image ending in -overlay.png, next to the photo ending in -main.jpg with the same ID. Putting them back means layering the PNG on top of the photo at the same size. MemoriesBack does this automatically for every photo whose overlay matches its size.
How the files pair up
Each memory with edits has two files sharing one ID, for example 2017-12-31_D3AC…-main.jpg and 2017-12-31_D3AC…-overlay.png. The main file is the original camera image; the overlay is a full-frame transparent layer.
Merging them
- Open MemoriesBack and select your export ZIP parts.
- For each pair, the photo is turned upright using its orientation tag and the overlay is drawn on top.
- The result is saved as a new JPEG (quality 95) with the original date and location written in. Your original export ZIPs are not changed.
Limits
If an overlay is a different size than its photo, it is not stretched or guessed into place; the photo is kept unchanged and listed in the manifest. Video overlays are not burned into the video file yet: the PNG is kept next to the video, and the included album page shows it on top while playing.
